Palestinian journalist Saleh Aljafarawi was killed during an armed clash in Gaza City on Sunday, October 12, two days after Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement.
According to the Gaza Ministry of Interior, a clash between the Doghmush clan, and Hamas occurred, killing 27 people, including 19 clan members and eight Hamas members. The 28-year-old Aljafarawi was reportedly shot seven times while covering the ongoing clashes in the neighborhood of Sabra.
Some reports also claimed that the clan fighting Hamas was affiliated with Israel, but other sources denied the claim.
Aljafarawi’s death occured during the initial phase of the ceasefire agreement, which includes the withdrawal of Israeli troops, the release of hostages and prisoners, and the opening of borders to allow humanitarian aid in Gaza.
Less than 24 hours after his death, Saleh’s brother, Naji Aljafaraw, was released after being held hostage in Israel.
A total of 1,700 Palestinian detainees were released in exchange for 20 living Israeli captives on Monday, October 13. This immediately followed by Hamas handing over eight deceased Israeli captives to the Red Cross.
A day after the ceasefire, Israel still has limited humanitarian aid trucks entering Gaza to only 300—only half the agreed number under the ceasefire provision brokered by Trump.
Meanwhile, relatives of the released Palestinian prisoners also reported that they were instructed by Israel not to celebrate and not to speak to the media.
The genocidal war of Israel on Gaza has killed at least 67,913 people and injured 170,134, while over 270 journalists have been killed in the deadliest genocide since October 2023.
